posted on April 1, 2025

The Mercy Wound and Vein Center is located on the first floor of the hospital, near the atrium and Cath Lab. Convenient entrance is located off Johnson Street. Phone is 319-339-3967.

Hours are Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The Mercy Wound and Vein Center provides advanced outpatient treatment for chronic and non-healing wounds and is the only facility of its kind in Johnson County. An experienced team, cutting-edge treatments, and evidence-based clinical protocols provide superior healing outcomes for difficult to heal wounds.

Gagan Kamal, MD, FRCA, is Medical Director of the Wound Center; Nathan Schneider, MD, FACS, is Medical Director of the Vein Center; and Brent Strabala, RN, is Program Director.

Our Center has been recognized with a national award for clinical excellence.

Indications for wound care include:

  • Diabetic wounds
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Venous stasis ulcers
  • Arterial ulcers
  • Vasculitic ulcers
  • Non-healing surgical wounds
  • Complex soft tissue wounds
  • Traumatic wounds
  • Infected wounds

Mercy's approach includes access to specialists in orthopedic surgery, infectious diseases, podiatry, and nutrition. Treatment plans will be highly individualized. Treatment methods will include skin substitute and vein ablations, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).

During HBOT the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen under pressure, causing the oxygen to diffuse into the blood plasma. The pressurized environment helps to reduce swelling and discomfort, while providing the body with at least 10 times its normal supply of oxygen to help repair damaged tissues.

Indications for vein ablation include:

  • Varicose veins
  • Restless legs
  • Heaviness and fatigue
  • Leg or ankle swelling
  • Pain, aching or cramping
  • Burning or itching of the skin
  • Skin changes
  • Ulcers
