Why bariatric surgery?
Once a person is severely obese, the likelihood that he or she will lose enough weight by dietary means alone and remain at a healthy BMI is estimated at 3% or less. (Gastrointestinal surgery for severe obesity: National Institute of Health Consensus Development Conference Statement. Am J Clin Nutr 1992.) Mercy now offers the gastric balloon!
